If you do not play with headphones you should really consider getting some. It really does help you hear the enemy better. When you are guarding a planted bomb you don't have to see it to hear the bomb being defused. Headphones also make you realize how much noise you make and what enemies might be able to hear you.

One of the most important sounds to listen for is foot steps. If you run on carpet it will sound very different than if you are running though shallow water. You can often tell exactly where someone is just by listening the their foot steps. It is important that you slow to a walk when you are near the enemy. If you crouch you will move just as quietly but it will take you an extra-half second to stand and start running if you need to. Hold the walk key when you are climbing ladders too because they make a uniquely identifiable noise.

One of the most abused features of Counter-strike is the voice chat. It is good to use a microphone to call out enemy positions, the location of the bomb and any game related strategy. It is not ok to constantly babble about pointless crap. When you talk other players can not hear what is going on around them. Just keep the chatter to things game related.
